Rock Hill BMX track drawing all ages
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- This week Rock Hill officials learned they will host the BMX World Cup in 2016. The track here prides itself on preparing riders from inexperienced youngsters to Olympic hopefuls.
Aidan Beckett, 7, spends his summers bobbing the concrete waves of Rock Hill.
"We did the pump track, then we did some warm ups, then we got on the track," said Aidan, a Rock Hill resident.
It's somewhat a family passion; his older brother Ethan can also be seen tearing up the track.
"We did some sprints over there by the bleachers," said Ethan.
The Becketts took part in a BMX skills camp at Rock Hill's track Thursday.
"Various ages, we even had one kid that was five," said Mike King, BMX supervisor for Rock Hill.
King says the track really heats up in the summer months as kids have a little more free time.
September will bring out the pros to Rock Hill as the track will host the World Cup Finals.
"This race is crucial for Olympic hopefuls, all the Olympic hopefuls that are trying to make the team for 2016. Individual riders will be going after ranking points and country points," said King.
King says the event will also send a jolt into Rock Hill's economy.
"We're looking at over 200 athletes from all over the world, 35 plus countries and there going to be here for 10 to 14 days, so that's huge for the economic impact of the city of Rock Hill," said King.
King says the love of BMX is often a family passion and that's easy to see with the Beckett brothers.
